LAUNCHING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER SEARCH
During even the best of economic times, launching a successful career search can be a daunting experience. Searching for a new job or wanting to change careers can be very stressful and probably will not happen over night. Employing such mental strategies as motivation, determination, and self confidence can be very helpful during this crucial period. For instance some career searches become a marathon and not a sprint. The client must understand this could happen and not lose hope or get down on him or herself. He or she must be willing to stay in the search for the long run and believe in his or her ability.
Sometimes a person really doesn’t know what they want to do! We help the client do a self assessment so he or she gets a good idea of the skills they can bring to the table. For instance we might ask, “Did the client voluntarily quit his or her previous job?” If so, what was the reason for leaving? Was it something within the organization or did they just decide to switch careers? Financially how long can they survive before finding a job becomes a must? More importantly, what is the client looking for in their next career; a better salary, job satisfaction, or more responsibility? If a person could do any job in the world, which one would that be? This question can really get the client thinking about his or her future.
We identify areas (e.g. resumes, cover letters or skill inventories) the client might need to work on in order to land their desired job. Empowering and encouraging the client to take responsibility is an inherent part of any process when it comes to improving performance.
