DEVELOPING A COMPETITIVE (SPORTS) EDGE
The basic ways of improving performance are addressed through a five-step process. Most agree that competitive sport begins with the right mental attitudinal frame. When the mental part of competition is not working, chances are the athlete will not perform physically up to his or her level. I address the mental part of sports to ensure it is congruent with the physical part.
There are three areas that are keys to improving performance; visualization, overcoming barriers and goal attainment. Being able to see the process work and believe in the process is imperative for anyone to succeed.
We also address the self confidence issue which is a must for any athlete to be successful. Once a person’s confidence is shaken, it can be difficult to reestablish. If a basketball player misses crucial free throws that might cost his or her team the game ; it can be devastating. Support of the team, coaches, and fans are needed. More importantly, however, the athlete must believe in him or herself that he or she will make the free throw the next time.
Other mental strategies such as motivation, determination and self-assurance are also addressed and tied into the performance improvement concept.
